Here are some of the important figures associated with Oystermouth Castle's history over the centuries. Stay tuned as we continue to update this page!
One of the original 'Twelve Knights of Glamorgan', William de Londres was the first Norman to hold control over Oystermouth and is believed to have built a wooden fortification near where the castle presently stands.
Gruffydd's father, Rhys ap Tewdwr, was King of the Welsh Kingdom of Deheubarth until his death and the subsequent takeover of Deheubarth by the Normans in 1093. Gruffydd was taken to Ireland as an infant, and spent much of his early life there until he returned to Wales in 1113. He is credited with chasing off the Normans from Gower and burning down the original wood fortification that stood where Oystermouth Castle is today.
