Oystermouth Castle Health & Safety and Access Statement

1.0 Commitment to Safety

Oystermouth Castle is dedicated to providing a safe and accessible environment for all visitors, staff, and volunteers, while preserving the integrity of the historic nature of the Castle. We recognize that historic sites present unique challenges (e.g., uneven surfaces, low lighting) and aim to manage these risks proportionately.

2.0 Access for All

  • Physical Access: We strive to ensure equal access where possible. Due to the nature of the site, some areas may have limited access to those less able. An accessible route via a slightly longer pathway around the parkland is available for wheelchair users and prams to the visitor centre within the Castle. An induction loop is available within the visitor centre.
  • Facilities: Toilets are located in the parkland outside the Castle. A key for the accessible toilet and baby change are available from staff/volunteers working in the Castle when open. General visitor parking is not available on site, however there are a limited number of disabled/blue badge spaces located on Castle Ave with a number of car parks in close proximity .
  • Assistance: The Friends of Oystermouth Castle are trained to assist visitors. Please contact us in advance for specific accessibility requirements and we will do our best to accommodate you.

3.0 Health & Safety Management

  • Risk Assessments: Regular risk assessments are carried out for the site by Swansea Council, to include all public areas, events, and maintenance work, adhering to CDM 2015 regulations where applicable.
  • Hazard Management: Due to the historic nature of the site, please be aware of uneven flooring, low ceilings, and steep steps. These areas are highlighted with with railings and ropes and lighting, with occasional signs, where necessary.
  • Contractors: All contractors must comply with our safety procedures and provide risk assessments before commencing work

4.0 Emergency Procedures

  • Fire Safety: In the event of an emergency, visitors will be guided to the nearest exit. Our assembly point is outside the main Castle gates
  • First Aid: First aid kits and trained first aiders are available on-site. Please report any accidents to a staff/volunteer member.

5.0 Visitor Responsibility

We kindly ask our visitors to take personal responsibility for their own safety by wearing sensible footwear, following signage, staying on designated paths, and supervising children at all times especially at height and along the battlements.
